Natural law theory has been taken up and modified more recently by three philosophers who write in a style closer to the analytic tradition, John Finnis, Alastair MacIntyre and Jean Porter. He shows how an ethical dilemma would turn the duty "to do the right thing" into the duty to do "the wrong thing" (since there is no alternative). We might think of modernity's impact in Asia as generating several distinct but related transformations: the rise and preeminence of a scientific rationality and the fruits of scientific and technological inquiry (in medicine, warfare, and industry); new alignments of power, beginning with colonialism through much of Asia and yielding eventually to nationalism and independent nation-states; the advent of new political and economic ideologies and sometimes bloody experimentation with communism, socialism, and totalitarianism; the rise of Western hegemony through global capitalism and consumerism, with their often exploitative relationship to human labor and ecosystems; and new ideas from the West about gender equality, human rights, and democracy.

Jesus Christ is the concrete, absolute, unqualified norm of all ethical actions. Paul Ramsey and James Gustafson are two prominent Protestant thinkers who have developed a Protestant approach to medical ethics. Gula assume responsibility for what he or she does. In a heated election, Christian parents can model a measured response. The statement of this failure is not meant to impugn the intentions of those who have tried. Nowhere is the ethic of Jesus in more obvious conflict with both the impulses and the necessities of ordinary men in typical social situations.

Richard Hays, The Moral Vision of the New Testament (NY: HarperRow, 1996), p. 209: A recent discussion of the use of Scripture in ethics reorganizes Gustafson’s ideas but says little new on this point. For this latter task, virtue ethics seems no better, and no worse, than its rivals. Nevertheless it must be admitted that the ethical rigor of the early church was maintained through the hope of the second coming of Christ and the establishment of his Kingdom. We can formulate general rules about what it takes to be brave, or dishonest, or generous.
