Like the Oregon City-Canemah operation, the Cascades Railroad was a mule-powered portage line linking river steamboat routes, but in this case it was connecting the lower and middle navigable sections of the Columbia River around the north side of the Cascades Rapids. The North Carolina legislature authorized an east to west railroad that would connect the coastal plain with the piedmont opening the state for economic and industrial development.

Twenty years later, Union Pacific had become the largest railroad company in the territory. The capital stock of the company was fixed at $7,500,000 with the privilege of increasing same to $10,000,000. The lower end of the "Z" represents the start from the main line and the rest shows the grade and reverse track necessary to attain the elevation above the pockets to the dumping track. The train would be shifted to the Western Maryland Railroad tracks and picked up by an Emmitsburg Railroad engine which would haul over the Western Maryland as far as Rocky Ridge and then over their own tracks to Emmitsburg.
