Nevertheless, this does not stop students and parents from believing that passing the state test is an indicator of college and career readiness. This belief creates serious problems when high schools focus exclusively on getting students to pass state tests. When students do pass the state exam, perhaps in the tenth or eleventh grade, their program of study may be hopelessly out of sequence with what college eligibility requires. One possible means to help address this disconnect would be to revise state assessments so that they connect with outcomes beyond high school and, in the process, provide students with solid information on how ready they are and what they need to do to be college and career ready.
