The task of distinguishing the truth from attempts to deceive is a daunting one. The principle used for spotting deceptions is the presence of contradictions, of which there are several kinds: What a person says at one moment may contradict what is said at another. What a person says may contradict expressive actions, as when anger is denied but nevertheless indicated by facial or bodily gestures or visible physiological changes, such as the reddening of the face. And what a person says may seem unbelievable in light of the situation; often an inference about an emotion in another person is made on the basis of consensual impressions of how people typically react in the same type of situation.

The constriction is connected with a strong effort to protect oneself from anticipated danger. In contrast, a challenge makes one feel good, and there is apt to be a considerable expansion of one's functioning, with relevant thoughts coming easily and with a subjective impression that one is approaching the zenith of one's powers. The smooth and superior functioning characteristic of challenge and of what Maslow (1971) called "peak experiences" has been called "flow" by Csikszentmihalyi (1976).

My view of science is not based on how well we measure psychological variables, though such measurement is plainly essential, or how much we know or can predict, but on an attitude toward measurement and inquiry. Any field of inquiry that seeks programmatically to reason about its phenomena, and to build and evaluate understanding through observation, is a science. It uses multiple methods of research, whatever may be available to get at its phenomena, and tries to conceptualize about structure and process within a coherent and self-consistent framework of logical thought.
