Recruited in Colombia, he began spying for the CIA in 1974. He was later transferred back to Moscow and served in the Foreign Ministry’s Global Affairs Department, where he had access to secret documents containing Soviet evaluations of international events and trends. It is unclear how much information Ogorodnik had passed to the Americans by the time he came under suspicion of espionage, and whether or not he was being The Cold War 31 used to pass inflammatory documents to the United States.
