The application process includes a five-page paper you write about why you should be interviewed and hired. My guess is that’s done to screen out people. Some people will refuse to write that much, and some people will show in their writing why they should not be interviewed or not be hired. I know this much: when I become a principal, I will not require teachers to turn in written, detailed lesson plans every week like we’ve had to do this year. A few teachers did no planning, so all teachers had to spend the extra time filling out those holistic education lesson plan forms.

You did study, right? You promised me you would study. You have to get your grade up in Physics. If we’re going to be college roommates next year you have to be in college, which means you have to graduate from high school. You need the physics credit. Why is this more important to me than to you? It’s important to me. I’ll pass Physics. Yeah, I studied some, but I had to work last night, and it was hard to study much while I managed the movie theater concession stand. We weren’t all that busy, but my boss decided that everything in the concession stand needed to be cleaned.

For some reason, every teacher thinks the only way to prove we know anything is to write about it. So in gym class I had to write about why a team should use man-to-man defense instead of zone defense in certain basketball game situations. You don’t write about basketball. You play basketball. This is so dumb. Most of us do what we’re told to do. We get our homework done one way or the other. We study for tests. It’s just one more assignment, whether it’s math problems or Spanish translation or short-story character analysis or a science lab to write up or a computer project to do.
