Geologically Storing Carbon : Learning from the Otway by Peter J. Cook

By Peter J. Cook

Carbon catch and geological garage (CCS) is shortly the single method that we will make deep cuts in emissions from fossil fuel-based, large-scale resources of CO2 comparable to energy stations and commercial vegetation. but when this know-how is to be appropriate to the group, it really is crucial that it really is credibly proven by means of world-class scientists and engineers in an open and obvious demeanour at a commercially major scale. the purpose of the Otway undertaking was once to just do this.Geologically Storing Carbon offers an in depth account of the CO2CRC Otway venture, some of the most finished demonstrations of the deep geological garage or geosequestration of carbon dioxide undertaken wherever. This booklet of 18 entire chapters written through best specialists within the box is worried with impressive technological know-how, however it is not only a suite of medical papers – it really is approximately 'learning by way of doing'. for instance, it explains how the undertaking was once organised, controlled, funded and developed, in addition to the method taken to neighborhood concerns, rules and approvals. It additionally describes find out how to comprehend the positioning: Are the rocks automatically appropriate? Will the CO2 leak? Is there adequate garage capability? Is tracking powerful? this is often the publication for geologists, engineers, regulators, venture builders, undefined, groups or somebody who desires to larger know how a carbon garage undertaking quite 'works'. it's also for individuals desirous about acquiring an in-depth appreciation of 1 of the foremost expertise thoughts for reducing greenhouse emissions to the ambience.

This proved to be the right move. With $13 million promised by the funders (Federal Government, Victorian State Government and industry) plus the funding already held by CO2CRC, it was now possible to start on developing more detailed plans and costings. Two things happened at this time: first, and somewhat inevitably, real costs proved to be much higher than the original estimates. Second, researchers began to realise that Otway presented some exceptional research opportunities, with the inevitable rise in costs that an expanded science programme entailed.

This was a risky move to the extent that there was no certainty that the remainder of the funds would be found, or that the project would Chapter 1— DEVELOPING THE PROJECT go ahead. Nonetheless, access to the Buttress CO2 was seen as so critical to the success of a future pilot project that it was seen as a risk worth taking. This proved to be the right move. With $13 million promised by the funders (Federal Government, Victorian State Government and industry) plus the funding already held by CO2CRC, it was now possible to start on developing more detailed plans and costings.

These requirements were seen as likely to have a significant impact on the structure of CO2CRC and require the establishment of an operating entity. In May 2004 a draft proposal was submitted to the CO2CRC Joint Venture participants. At this stage the proposed structure for carrying out the project consisted of a Project Steering Committee coordinated and managed by CO2CRC. It envisaged that an operator would need 11 to be appointed to deal with day-to-day operations, while the CO2CRC would undertake the research activities.
