Eventually, as the salt was dissolved and carried away by groundwater, the crests of the anticlines collapsed. Mines near Thompson, north of the highway, produced uranium from the Morrison formation, the Jurassic rock layer just below the Dakota sandstone. Dinosaur tracks were found in one of the uranium mines here. As you have probably noted, areas surfaced with Mancos shale support few plants. The problem is partly the arid climate, five to six inches of rainfall annually, partly the high selenium content of the Mancos shale.
The Dakota sandstone, the oldest Cretaceous formation, caps a west-dipping cuesta at the Muddy Creek bridge. Note the bumps in the highway pavement where it crosses the Mancos shale floor of Castle Valley. The formation is weak and incompetent, and contains clay minerals that swell when they get wet, so it forms a poor road base. In roadcuts, the coal layers of the Mancos shale appear to be thicker than on the east side of the anticline; some coal has been mined in this area. Channel-filling sandstone layers appear in some roadcuts, particularly near the Sevier-Emery county line.
The buttes and pinnacles ofMonument Valley are composed of Cedar Mesa sandstone. The slopes at their bases are Halgaito shale. Some of the monu ments are capped with red ledges of Organ Rock shale. The highway near the state line crosses a slightly domed surface of hard, resistant limestone belonging to the Honaker Trail formation, generally covered by windblown sand. The uppermost of the Pennsyl vanian rocks in this area, this formation can be seen to better advantage near Monument Pass, where the dune sand is less abun dant.
