Both the Russians and Americans have been designing such space support systems, which rely on recycling by biological systems. The crew eats some food initially put in, and wastes come out. These are taken and processed. Two of the chief processing systems consist of chambers in which microbes work. One is a microbe that can get its energy by oxidising hydrogen (hydrogenomonas). It uses the energy, not energy from the sun this time, but chemical energy from the oxidisation of hydrogen, and it reduces CÛ2 and it grows.

Many of the processes I have mentioned, e . g . worms, blow flies, maggots, e t c . , are already in operation in many parts of the world. Their joining together in "bioplexes11 is also beginning to happen. The useful transformations that occur and the products resulting are often those in short supply in this country. We believe, therefore, that they are of special significance to the UK. Not only would they relieve us of import costs but the development of the machines would possibly provide an important export market, but only if research and development are taken up here vigorously and without delay.

45 - The process which Dr. Porteous has been talking about, that is hydrolysis by chemical methods, and analogous processes, might have to be used although we may be able to get round i t ; nevertheless most transformations will be made by living organisms. If such processes are to be used in the waste disposal industry, then they should be capable of being adapted to a number of scales. That is they should be able to be adaptable to treat wastes from a very large industry, from a very large city, from a small village, or from a small farm, or even a single house in some cases.
